A skin graft refers to skin transplanted onto a wound. A skin flap is a transplant that includes skin plus deeper tissues like muscle, blood vessels. To be successful, both skin grafts and flaps need healthy, oxygenated tissue. If the initial graft or flap starts to fail, HBOT should be administered immediately and treated until the graft or flap is stable. (Usually 4-6 treatments)

In the event of a failed graft or flap and a second one is to be attempted; Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is used to prepare the wound site before the transplant with 20 HBOT sessions and to promote healing after the skin graft or flap transplant with 10 more HBOT sessions to increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area.
